Year 5 Flood Awareness Event

By 6th June 2019 Uncategorised

Year 5 have had a fabulous morning at the University of Cumbria Flood Awareness Day!! We have learnt all about rivers, looking at different models of rivers, seeing how water levels can change and looking at features of rivers from source to sea. We even dressed up as rivers (well Mrs Thompson did!) We also had a video from the Fire Brigade about safety on quicksand, telling us what to do if we ever got stuck in the mud on Morecambe Bay. The Met Office told us about weathewr warnings and extreme weather events and Lancaster City Council told about flood awareness and how they are prepared if there is a flood. We looked in the sewers with United Utilities remote controlled cameras and were rescued by Lancaster Search and Rescue and the Fire Brigade. We also had a talk from National Flood Forum about how to prepare for a flood and what items we might need in the event of a flood – just like Storm Desmond a few years ago. We’ve taken lots of photos – they are on Facebook at – and some of the agencies have taken photos of us having an amazing time too! Good job we were all on our Bowerham Best behaviour!!
